How to make your own candles?

Thanks to Wecandoo, I was able to participate in a scented candle creation workshop and I loved it. We were about ten people and a lady, working at IOKKO, explained us during the workshop, about 1 hour and a half, how to create scented candles. She shared her passion and know-how with us, which was really incredible. Thanks to her, we were able to create two of them, with two different scents.

Contrary to what I would have thought, making a candle is quite simple if you know the ingredients and the measurements you need. So that's why I want to share this knowledge with you.

These ingredients correspond to a small candle, which can burn for up to 25 hours, with a candle measuring 7 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter:

- Water bath: saucepan + heat-resistant bowl or Aroma-zone water bath

- Scale

- Beaker or glass

- Thermometer

- Two heat-resistant containers (test first with a lighter)

- Wax (the ones I made contain soy wax)

- Pre-waxed cotton or wooden wicks

- Perfume or essential oils

- Two clothespins (to hold the wicks while the wax dries)

Steps :

1- Melt 80 gr of wax in a double boiler.

2- Prepare 10% of perfume in a beaker, that is to say 8,5 gr of perfume. Leave aside.

3- Once the wax is completely liquid, pour a small amount into the bottom of its

container. Wait for the wax to harden a little so you can attach the wick.

Tip: use a whisk to mix the wax so that it melts faster.

4- Once the wick is fixed, cover it with wax so that it holds well (about 1 cm), then take the temperature of the wax. This one must be between 70 and 80° (the ideal is 75°). Once the temperature is reached, pour your perfume and mix for 2 minutes.

Explanation: if it was not well mixed, it is like oil and water which are immiscible

5- Pour the mixture in its container and wait for the wax to cool down.

6- Let your candle rest for 24 hours before cutting the wicks (at 1 cm height from the wax) and lighting it.

7- And here it is! You can repeat these steps to make as many candles as you want.

Tip

How do I measure the amount of wax needed for my container? Fill the chosen container with water to the desired wax level. Weigh the amount of water in ml and multiply by 0.9.
