Chapter 11
Two months later.
Over the past two months, I had been training harder and more intensely, and my efforts were starting to pay off. I could see my body changing with more muscle, more endurance, more of everything. And even though I trained with Will most of the time, nothing had changed between us. Except that I was even more in love with him now. There was a strong bond between Will, the whole gang and me. We had become a real family and I would do anything to protect them while rescuing my sister, because I was now sure that the government was holding her prisoner. Anyway, it was Max who had given me the information. He had obtained it by searching the army archives and thanks to some decoding techniques, together with Will, they had managed to glean some very useful information, such as the fact that the army was still carrying out experiments on infected people, like my sister. And there was no way I was going to leave her there like a lab rat.
"Hey," Will said, cutting me off, "are you okay?"
" Yes, why?" I replied.
"You seemed to be elsewhere."
"Yes, I was in the clouds. I was thinking about my sister," I admitted to him.
"Don't worry, we'll go and save her soon. We just need to come up with a plan, and you need to finish your training and we'll go."
"Do you promise?"
"Promise," he said, holding out his little finger.
I squeezed it with mine, concluding our promise. I had been feeling so good about my relationship with Will lately that I was able to open up more easily than when I first came here. I talked to him more about my family, my sister, even though he didn't tell me much about his. I didn't mind. Mostly because I thought he was still struggling with the fact that he had lost his family, like all the survivors in this house.
"Well, shall we join the others in front of the fire?"
"Absolutely, a good campfire and friends is always good for morale," I laughed.
He held out his hand, and when I took it, he led me to the front of the house, where our friends were waiting for us, melting marshmallows.
"Well, it's about time," Liam said to us.
"We needed some privacy," Will replied. "But you don't know this."
"Hilarious, Will. You've lost your sense of humor, because that was really not funny. You know what, I could give you a lesson!"
"Yeah, yeah."
"I know, I'm so generous."
"If you're that generous," Laura said, "then can you make my marshmallows?"
"I'd do anything for you, you know that," he hugged Laura and took her candy.
Will took them from me and baked them along with his. To tell you the truth, I didn't really know how to do that, because I had never baked marshmallows in the fire. So I was very grateful that Will did it.
We all needed this night. With all the training, all the thinking about what is inevitably going to happen, we sometimes forget to have fun, to take some time for ourselves, to relax. That was exactly why we decided to organize this. To think about something else. Because I had been there for more than two months, but for my friends, it had been even longer. And believe me, even if we survived, everything was not so easy. The war was getting closer and closer. And one day, it would catch up with us.
