Chapter 8
As I headed to the kitchen to get something to eat for Snow, I ran into Will preparing dinner.
"Hey," I said.
"Hi. You want a snack?"
"Almost. I'm here to get something to give to Snow. Do we have any meat anywhere?"
"Uh, look in the fridge," he answered.
I went to the fridge and rummaged around to find something to feed the dog. When I finally found it, I turned back to Will.
"By the way, I wanted to thank you for Snow," I told him.
"Snow?"
"Yes, the dog. That's how we named him, after his..."
"Hair," he added.
"Yes."
"Nice name," he said.
"Thank you. Wait, am I dreaming or did you just compliment me?"
"Maybe," he laughed.
"Well, thanks, but you should know that it was Rachel who came up with the name."
"Oh, so the compliment wasn't for you," Will teased.
"Yes, I'm keeping it. It's so rare," I laughed back.
I laughed again as I picked up a plate and dropped my booty into the bowl. I was sure Snow would love the presentation. He had good taste, that dog. I turned around, ready to go to him, when Will stood in front of me.
"That's not my intention, you know," he said, suddenly serious.
"What do you mean?" I said, not understanding a word he was saying.
"Never to compliment you, it's just that..."
"But I was joking," I replied.
"I know... Look, Chloe, ever since you got here, you're all I can think about. You're funny, you're beautiful, in short, I feel good when I'm with you. Even if it's not easy to see because we often fight. With you, I can open up, much more than with the others. I don't know how you do it, you calm me down and I thank you for that. But there are things I can't tell you. Not to anyone else for that matter. And it's eating away at me not to tell you. I can't, because if I do, you'll hate me. And I don't think I could handle that."
"What? But Will, I never asked you to do that. I have my secrets too, things that are too hard to admit. I would never force you to tell me, and I would hate you even less for it," I say to him as I move closer to him. I take his hand and link our fingers together. "I like you a lot, Will, in spite of our arguments," I said.
"I like you too, Chloe," he said, looking into my eyes with his beautiful green ones. "More than you know."
He raised his free hand and stroked my cheek tenderly. Then he moved closer, little by little, and all of a sudden, his lips were on mine. My heart raced as I responded to his kiss. I had never felt as good as in his arms, so much so that I forgot everything: my past, my survival and especially, the starting point of this whole adventure, my sister.
